IEEE 1609 family gets a new member...

The IEEE 1609 project begun to review the existing standards covering Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments (WAVE) towards Full Use standards. The project agreed in spring 2008 to address additional trial use lessons learned during the field tests.

A new standard was started, namely IEEE 1609.5 "Standard for Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments (WAVE) - Communication Manager". As introduced by Thomas Kurihara, Chair of the Dedicated Short Range Communication Working Group, "IEEE P1609.5 defines communicaiton management service in support of wireless connectivity among vehicle-based devices, and between fixed roadside devices  and vehicle-based devices for Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments".

According Kurihara, IEEE P1609.5 collects the communication management services previously defined in IEEE 1609.3 and IEEE 1609.4 and provides a more clear guidance to user of the entire family of standards.

More concretely, contents in IEEE 1609.5 may include:
  • new WAVE Short Message Protocol (WAMP) features like: Repetitive message generation by the stack; message relay for increased coverage; Duplicate filtering.
  • Location aware service
  • Different channel timing schemes for increased efficiency and quality of service
  • Standardized Application Program Interface(s) for data, control, and test
  • More flexible communications service management
